7 Stress-Relieving Tips: Promoting Mental Health During Stress Awareness Month

April is Stress Awareness Month, and it’s a perfect time to focus on reducing stress and promoting mental health. Stress can have a significant impact on individuals of all ages, including senior citizens. Seniors can be particularly vulnerable to stress because of factors like physical limitations, chronic health conditions, and isolation. Hence, it is essential to identify and incorporate stress-relieving strategies into our daily lives for our overall well-being.

At the Chilliwack District Seniors Resources Society, we understand and value the physical and mental health of our seniors. In this article, we want to share some practical stress-relieving tips for seniors:

  1. Stay Active: Regular exercise can release endorphins, which are natural mood enhancers that help reduce stress. Seniors can engage in low-impact exercises such as walking, stretching, or yoga, or other activities they enjoy.
  2. Connect with Friends and Family: Talking to a loved one or spending time with friends can be an effective stress reliever. You can schedule regular video calls or meet-ups with the friends and family members they feel most comfortable with.
  3. Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness meditation can help alleviate stress by focusing on the present moment. You can attend classes at our centre or use apps like Calm and Headspace to practice mindfulness.
  4. Get Enough Sleep: You should aim to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Establishing and sticking to a regular sleep routine can help improve the quality and quantity of sleep.
  5. Practice Deep Breathing: Deep breathing exercises can help alleviate stress and lower blood pressure. You can take deep breaths in through the nose, hold for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly through their mouth.
  6. Engage in Relaxation Techniques: Different relaxation techniques such as aromatherapy, listening to music, or taking a warm bath can be effective in reducing stress levels.
  7. Get Involved in Activities: Participating in different activities and hobbies can be a great way to relieve stress. You can engage in activities such as gardening, cooking, painting, reading, or any other activity they enjoy.

At the Chilliwack District Seniors Resources Society, we provide various resources and programs daily to help you stay active, engage in social activities, and promote overall well-being. You can reach out to us (+1 (604) 793-9979) for any assistance or explore our website to know more.

Utilizing the tips mentioned above, will help you feel happier and better equipped to deal with the challenges that may arise in your daily lives, leading to a better quality of life.
